Something got my corn
We had strong storms the Friday night of Labor Day weekend. The winds blew down several of my plants. Since I worked late and it was dark by the time I got home I didn’t pay much attention to it. I went to bed and the next morning discovered something had found the corn.
Whatever it was ravaged through about 10 ears of corn, broke some other plants that had not been producing. Not much I could do, so I cleaned up and staked down the rest of the plants.
The very next night my unwanted guest appeared again. It destroyed several more plants and ate another 5 or 6 ears of corn. I didn’t know what to make of all this destruction, I just fixed what remaining plans I had and hope for the best. The third night we had thunderstorms. Since I had the remaining plants tied up, nothing blew over. It appears my guest did not visit the third night. I’m not sure if it’s because I tied up the plants more securely the second time or it is because I left the light on over night, but at least I had a break from this critter.
To be fair I have not seen this unwanted guest. The only animals I have seen in our back yard are small rabbits and the occasional tabby cat roaming the yard. My wife mentioned at one point she had witnessed a raccoon in the back yard once trying to get into our garbage. I’m not one to place blame and since I have not personally seen this raccoon, its hard for me to say what got the corn. All my sources and research point to raccoon’s. I guess it’s time to set up the night vision camera and record the happenings in the garden.
Conclusion
The corn garden wasn’t a total loss this year, but certainly something I’ll need to think about in the future. I’ll need to find some other solution to keep out the animals before I decided to put this much effort into growing corn again. The image below is what I was able to get from the garden this year. The few I did manage to salvage were quite good. With a little more practice and some way to keep out the critters I should be able to get better results in the future. Thanks for following along.
