My first sweet corn seedlings

I came home to some very small seedlings. This made me happy as we have been getting quite a lot of rain so I was a bit worried they’d be overwatered. I have something to look forward to each day now until harvest. It’s going to be exciting watching these grow.

Part 1 of my sweet corn journal was preparing the new plot and planting the seeds. This occurred on May 20th, so it took a good 9-10 days for them to sprout, good to know and definitely notes I’m keeping here for the record. I’ve included some pictures so we have something to refer to in August or September when hopefully it will ready to harvest.

Quick note on the weather, yesterday it started to get humid here in northern Illinois. According to the weather we are headed right to 80 degree humid days. I guess we are skipping those nicer 70 degree spring days. Today was in the low 80’s and with a bit of humidity. It’s going to get warmer and rainy the rest of the week. I was also told I could have planted my corn several weeks ago. However, because this is a brand new plot It took me a solid weekend to prep and till the new garden plot. Next year I hope to plant my crops a little sooner. We’ll see how that goes.

Thank you, Dave
