What is this article about?
What is the deal and how do you get paid. Basically if you are a ComEd customer and have an old refrigerator, freezer or window air conditioner unit ComEd will pay you to recycle them.
The following article explains our experience with this program. And yes, spoiler alert, you don’t need to read the whole article. In our experience we got paid $70
What are the steps?
- Measures your existing refrigerator.
- Enter this in the online calculator to verify your unit qualifies.
- Call or visit the online scheduler to schedule the pickup.
- Wait for ComEd to come pickup your unit.
- Wait for your check.
- Cash the check.
The first thing you want to do is measure your existing refrigerator. In our case the electric company had a graphic on their site which displayed exactly how to measure your unit. The goal is you want the “Inside Dimensions” of your unit. If you are a ComEd customer you can find this tool on their recycling page.
This is what you should see if your unit meets the correct requirements.
Our old freezer measured 27 inches wide by 22 inches deep, by 48 inches high. I entered this into the online calculator.
What I did was print out the sheet ComEd provided on their website. This made it easier when I was in front of the actual unit taking the measurements.
This also provided a place to write down the numbers and bring back to my computer to enter into the website calculator.
After getting the measurements proceed to the online scheduler.
This program is meat for existing customers so you will be required to verify this with your account number. Once you have verified your account number you can proceed with scheduling your pickup.
If you notice the fine print on the last image, ComEd was also offering $10 for each working room air conditioner. Since we had two of these this was an extra $20 on top of the $50 we received for the freezer.
The remainder of the steps are account and location specific. I’ve chosen not to include those screen images here. If you get this far then you already have an account number and will see everything related to your specific account and location.
From this point on its just a matter of filling out the rest of the forms. Not very difficult at all.
They also give you the choice of receiving a check or prepaid visa card. We opted for the check.
The biggest challenge with this process is finding a 4 hour time window that works. When I scheduled our pickup there were only two dates available, a Monday and Thursday. So if you work M-F during the day this could be a challenge for someone to schedule.
We received and extra $20 for recycling two of or old air conditioners in addition to the freezer.

We received an email to confirm the day and 4 hour window a day or two before they showed up. I think we were the first stop as they were at our house by 8:30 or 8:45. Two guys showed up and they had no issues with hauling it away.
They did remind us that it would take approximately 4 to 6 weeks before we would get our check. So you can imagine my delight when it was only about 2 weeks when our check showed up.
Here is a picture of our check. ComEd contracts this service out to a company called Recleim LLC which is where the check came from.
Conclusion
Definitely work taking the extra time and recycling these things and getting $70 on top of it. Go schedule your pickup today. Its great to free up some extra space in the garage.
