Box 22 – Coin Roll Hunting $25 in Pennies

I’m Dave Gates and this article series documents my experience coin roll hunting pennies. I initially started coin roll hunting in November of 2017.

It’s September 30th 2021 and I’m searching through pennies. Box 22 was an great box. Some copper and thirteen wheat pennies. Continue below for results of box 22.

Goals for coin roll hunting

Please read my inaugural coin roll article for my goals and thought process. Below is the short version.

• To have some fun, stay productive and keep busy.
• Treasure Hunting. Sort of fills that Indiana Jones wanna-be character. Finding treasure is always fun.
• To build up a copper bullion portfolio. There’s always room for more bullion in my portfolio.

So here is what I found from box 22 of coin roll hunting $25 in pennies.

• $5.68 of copper.
• (13) random wheat pennies.
• (4) Canadian pennies.
• (3) nice coins for albums.
• $19.32 of newer zinc coins which I will return to the bank.

I’m lucky the bank I use has a coin counting machine when returning the zinc pennies, so this won’t cost me. Some banks charge a 10% fee on the amount counted. I believe vending machines like Coin Star are similar.

In fact one reason for starting this project was to keep my cost as minimal as possible. If I had to pay for returning the rejects I don’t think I’d be as agreeable to this project.

Conclusion

Box 22 was good in terms of copper. I’ve been averaging about $4.00-$5.00 in copper per box. Box 22 produced $5.68 in copper. And since that is one of the goals for this round of hunting, I’m pretty satisfied with the results.

Thirteen wheat pennies is pretty good, especially since we got a pre-1920 coin. Very cool, that one will definitely being going into the album.

A 1959D and 1964 which are both in exceptional condition for their age were the two highlights for me this round.

Note to self: I’ve heard of some collectors putting aside good condition 2009 coins as they were low mintage. I’m not sure if I want to collect these, but I decided to put two of the aside from this box. They were decent condition and when I get new coin albums I’ll add them to it. Unless of course I find better condition coins in the mean time.

If I remember correctly, my all time best box in terms of copper was around $9.00. I’m wondering if I’ll ever top that.
