Box 17 – Coin Roll Hunting $25 in Pennies

I’m Dave Gates and this article series documents my experience coin roll hunting pennies. I initially started coin roll hunting in November of 2017.

After a long break, I’ve decided to get back into the swing of things. It’s a hot and humid Wednesday July 28, 2021 and I’m searching through pennies. Box 17 was a decent box. Continue reading for the results of this hunt.

Goals for coin roll hunting

Please read my inaugural coin roll article for my goals and thought process. Below is the short version.

So here is what I found from box 17 of coin roll hunting $25 in pennies.

I’m lucky the bank I use has a coin counting machine when returning the zinc pennies, so this won’t cost me. Some banks charge a 10% fee on the amount counted. I believe vending machines like Coin Star are similar.

Note to self: the bank I use may be catching onto me. Since I’ve picked up this project recently, the coin counter has started to act up. I had to visit another building to return my coins. During my most recent visit the clerks have also had to empty the counting machine a few times.

I’ve also been denied another box of coins when I visited the next day. Hum! I didn’t push it, as I have two un-searched boxes to keep me busy until next week.

In fact one reason for starting this project was to keep my cost as minimal as possible. If I had to pay for returning the rejects I don’t think I’d be as agreeable to this project.

Conclusion

Note to self: this was a box I’ve had packed away since pe-COVID. I’m just getting around to searching it. It was a decent hunt with some nice coins to add to the collection.

After working this box today, the kid would like to give each one of his cousins a wheat penny. We refer to the wheat pennies as treasures, so he would like to give them away as gifts. We will take another look at those in the near future to pick out one for each kid.

As info, the goal now is to secure a full box of pennies and gift them for Christmas this year. That means I need five boxes of copper pennies. I’m just shy of 4 completed boxes. I’ll continue to get more from the bank until we can completed this project.

Thanks,

Dave
