Box 12 – Coin Roll Hunting $25 in Pennies

I’m Dave Gates and this article series documents my experience coin roll hunting pennies. I initially started coin roll hunting in November of 2017.

After a long break, I’ve decided to get back into the swing of things. It’s a lazy summer, Tuesday and Wednesday July 13, 14, 2021 and I’m taking it easy searching through pennies. Box 12 was a big hit. Continue reading for the amazing finds and copper.

Goals for coin roll hunting

Please read my inaugural coin roll article for my goals and thought process. Below is the short version.

  1. To have some fun, stay productive and keep busy.
  2. Treasure hunting, sort of fills that Indiana Jones wanna-be character. Finding treasure is always fun.
  3. To build up a small copper bullion portfolio. There’s always room for more bullion in my portfolio.

So here is what I found from my twelfth box of coin roll hunting $25 in pennies.

I’m lucky the bank I use has a coin counting machine when returning the zinc pennies, so this won’t cost me. Some banks charge a 10% fee on the amount counted. I believe vending machines like Coin Star are similar.

In fact one reason for starting this project was to keep my cost as minimal as possible. If I had to pay for returning the rejects I don’t think I’d be as agreeable to this project.

I wrote this article on the 13th, and 14th of July, but forgot to take a screen shot of the price of copper. So here is a screen shot from Friday July 16, 2021, the price was $4.31/lb.

CONCLUSION

WOW! 48 wheat pennies in one box. What a great coin roll hunt. Note to self, this is a box of pennies I had acquired prior to the COVID pandemic. I’ve had it for years and just got around to opening it this week.

Boy what a treat, the other day I also went to the bank for a box of pennies and they gave me an entirely NEW box of pennies. That’s not going to help me for this project.

Naturally, I was excited to open a box I’ve had for a few years and discover all that I did. I hope I can still find boxes of circulated coins. That was a fantastic roll hunt. Keep in mind I’ve only been getting about $5 or 6 dollars of copper, but this one blew that way with $9.50.

Bonus on finding some really nice older coins that shine. These are one’s we will use for coin albums or just store them away. I’m very happy with box 12.

Thanks

Dave
